EMBL has acted swiftly in response to COVID by launching new initiatives and re-purposing existing facilities to provide a range of direct research and support services, including in collaboration with institutes in the Member States. Dedicated pages that highlight important structural features of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, including all observed ligand binding sites and protein-protein interaction residues, to support researchers in the development of treatments and vaccines. Integration of key datasets to identify and prioritise potential human and viral protein drug targets for COVID treatments. EMBL continues to provide many of our services in virtual and remote formats, to support research efforts efficiently and effectively during the pandemic. EMBL is supporting our Member States throughout the coronavirus pandemic, through direct activity, coordination of responses and data, and sharing of expert advice, as part of our mission to integrate European life science research.

This article is also available in Deutsch. Researchers identify thousands of genetic variants, many of which can be linked to specific diseases. Induced pluripotent stem cells iPSCs are suitable for discovering the genes that underlie complex and also rare genetic diseases. Tens of thousands of tiny genetic variations SNPs, single-nucleotide polymorphisms have been identified in the human genome that are associated with specific diseases. Many of these genetic variants are not located in the protein-coding regions of genes, but affect regulatory sections. Therefore, scientists are trying to find out if and in which tissues these variants can be linked to changes in the activity of specific genes. Typically, such analyses are performed in blood cells or tissue biopsies, depending on the type of disease.
